Somerset Church Towers [60 collotypes]

Brereton, R. P.; (J. Hamlet, ed.)

Description:

No publisher, no date [after 1904]. 1 page introduction by Hamlet, which explains that these 60 plates were prepared for an uncompleted monograph by Brereton. Handsomely bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in three-quarter navy crushed morocco over cloth boards. Spine in six compartments, with raised bands, gilt-tooled. A few slight scuffs at extremities of binding, otherwise very sound indeed. Internally very good, with excellent collotype reproductions of the author’s photographs. Near fine.

Apollonius of Rhodes: Argonautica] Apollonii Rhodii Argonauticorum Libri IV

Apollonius of Rhodes [ed. by Hoelzlin, with notes by various authors]

Description:

Leiden: Elzevier, 1641. Small 8vo, 543 pp. Greek text, with variants, 368 pp. commentary (in Latin), index. Some creasing and minor edge damage to the earliest and latest leaves of the text. The vellum covers are pulling away from text-block, with a gap all along the front hinge and most of the back, but still holding together. This detachment affords a view of the cords which hold the gatherings together, an interesting sight from the perspective of book construction. The spine is boldy hand-lettered “Apolonius cum notis” in an early, perhaps contemporary hand. Berghman #827 (“Edition incorrecte, mais rare.”); Rahir #509; Willem #510. Willem repeats the criticism of the text, but points out that this edition is still sought out for its variant readings. An interesting, reasonably solid copy of a less than common Elzevier imprint. Good.
